The Signal and Telecommunication Workshop, Southern Railway, Podanur initially set up in
1958 for manufacture and overhauling of Mechanical & Electromechanical Signalling
Equipments, has steadily progressed and today is a Pioneer Workshop manufacturing a wide
range of sophisticated Electrical & Electronics Signalling equipments .
This Workshop in its pursuit to quality and commitment, has been certified as
an ISO – 9002 firm for manufacture and supply of ‘Q ‘ series
Relays, through the certifying Agency M/S KPMG.
The ISO-9002 certification was issued on 21.9.98.
Rapid technological developments in the field of Railway Signalling and increased
allotment of funds toward S&T Works and Safety Works have set the Workshop to gear
itself and accept new projects and improve its commitment to quality . As a first step three
more shop floors are planned to be covered under ISO Quality Systems.
The workshop with its skilled, trained and dedicated staff strength of 1100 Employees has
produced S&T Equipments worth about 18 Crores during the financial year
1998-99.
This workshop manufactures and supplies safety signalling systems to the entire Indian
Railways in addition to meeting the urgent demands of prestigious projects like Gauge
conversion, Doubling, Electrification works on the Southern Railway.

Workshop, Podanur is the sole manufacturer of Push Button Single-Line Tokenless Block
Instrument in India. This Workshop also Manufactures sophisticated equipments like
Universal Axle Counter, SGE Double Line Block Instruments, Point machines, Control panels,
Coding Relays, Latch Relays, etc.,
All
these cater to the regular requirements of various Railways for construction and
maintenance purposes.
This
Workshop also manufactures import substitute products like QB3 Relays which were
earlier imported as CRR Relays from Japan at a Cost of Rs. 45,000/- The Foreign Exchange
savings worth about Rs. 1.6 Cores is being realised annually only on this Account.
This
Workshop also manufactures QBAT Relays which were earlier imported at a
cost of Rs. 13,000/- per Relay. QBAT Relays increases the length of the Track circuit,thus
reducing the line side Equipments, increasing the reliability. The Workshopsupplies this
Relay at a Cost of Rs.3075/- thus making a saving Rs.1.2 Crores in foreign exchange every
year.
This
workshop also manufactures QBA1 Relays used in Daido Block instruments.

44th railway week celebration was a grand success ,even news papers like 'The Hindu'
commended our efforts . Around 237 employees were awarded during the railway week
celebrations .
